As a young reporter in Chile during a state of siege, she learned that her life was in danger after one of her sources informed on her to a leader of the military junta. She returned home safely and spent the next ten years as a human rights advocate for political prisoners and journalists. (As a writer/producer for CBS News, she was instrumental in persuading Dan Rather and Walter Cronkite to join CPJ's Board of Directors.) In 1987, a severe illness forced her to leave CBS News where she worked as a writer/producer of world leaders' obituaries. She published four books, including the best-seller Sixth Sense: Unlocking Your Ultimate Mind Power. (http://amzn.to/ShWssu) In 1990, a second illness led to her having a near-death experience during which she was told that she would "recover and use this experience to help other people." However, doctors told her that she would be permanently disabled. Unwilling to accept this prognosis, she studied Buddhism, meditation, hypnotherapy, and the principles of mind-body medicine in order to heal. In the next five years, she earned two doctorates--in cognitive psychology and clinical hypnotherapy-- through independent study and launched a private practice helping people heal from trauma, PTSD, and stress-related health issues. In the past two decades, Dr. Laurie has helped thousands of individuals and has lectured at dozens of organizations. She directed a program for teenagers whose fathers were killed in the World Trade Center attack on September 11, 2001 and has worked with hundreds of eyewitnesses who suffered from flashbacks and nightmares for years. As a journalist, she has filed stories on the psychological impact of 9/11 for The New York Times' Long Island section (deceased). Dr. Nadel is running a support group for people in Long Beach who are under excessive stress as a result of the hurricane.
